Motorcycle & ATV Battery Cross Reference Chart
This chart covers common motorcycle, ATV, and powersport batteries from five major brands: Adventure Power, MotoBatt, Odyssey, Powersport, and Yuasa. Use it to find a direct replacement when your original battery is unavailable or to compare options across brands. The table includes both 6V and 12V batteries, covering conventional flooded types and sealed AGM units. Whether you're riding a vintage 6-volt bike or a modern fuel-injected sport bike, you'll find your match here.
Motorcycle batteries follow two main naming systems. The YTX series (YTX4L-BS, YTX12-BS, YTX14-BS, etc.) uses factory-activated AGM construction; these are the most common batteries on bikes made after 2000. The older YB and 12N series covers conventional flooded batteries still used in vintage bikes, ATVs, and small-displacement engines. The numbers in the model name often indicate physical size: a YTX14-BS is physically larger than a YTX12-BS, and they are not interchangeable.
PRO TIP: The YTX prefix means the battery is a factory-activated AGM. It arrives sealed and ready to install with no acid filling needed. YB prefix batteries are conventional, flooded-type batteries and may require electrolyte to be added before first use. When in doubt, choose YTX.

How to Read Motorcycle Battery Codes
Most motorcycle battery model numbers follow a pattern that indicates the battery type, configuration, and approximate size. Once you know the system, finding a replacement is much easier.
The YTX prefix stands for factory-activated AGM. These batteries come pre-filled and sealed at the factory. The number after YTX gives a rough capacity clue, YTX4L-BS is a small 3Ah battery, while YTX20L-BS is an 18Ah unit. The "L" means left-hand positive terminal. The "BS" suffix appears on sealed batteries in the Yuasa catalog and is the most common YTX format you'll find today.
The YB prefix (also CB for Powersport replacements) marks conventional flooded batteries. These use the same numbering logic: YB12A-A, YB16B-A, and so on. The number after YB relates to capacity. If the model ends in "-A" or "-B," that tells you the terminal orientation and sometimes the case configuration. Always check the terminal positions before ordering, because swapping them can mean the cables won't reach.
The older 12N series (12N7-3B, 12N24-3, etc.) follows a slightly different format. The "12" is the voltage, "N" means conventional flooded, and the digits after encode capacity and case style. The letter suffix (3B, 4A, etc.) indicates terminal position and case variation. These are common on vintage bikes from the 1970s through the early 1990s.
The 6N series works the same way but starts at 6 volts. You'll find these on small-displacement vintage bikes, mopeds, and older ATVs. Always check the voltage before ordering. A 6V battery will not work in a 12V system.
AGM vs. Conventional Motorcycle Batteries
AGM stands for Absorbent Glass Mat. The electrolyte is absorbed into fiberglass mats between the plates, so there's no free liquid inside. The battery is sealed, it won't spill if the bike tips over, and it never needs water added. AGM batteries also handle vibration better than conventional flooded types, which matters on dirt bikes, ATVs, and sport bikes that see rough terrain.
Conventional flooded batteries (YB, 12N, 6N series) use liquid electrolyte. If the battery ships dry, you'll need to add acid before the first use and then charge it properly before installing. After that, you'll need to check the water level a few times per year and top it off with distilled water. These batteries are usually a bit cheaper upfront but require more attention over their lifespan.
Most motorcycles made after 2000 came from the factory with an AGM battery. If your owner's manual specifies an AGM or MF (maintenance-free) battery, stick with an AGM replacement. The YTX series is the right choice for the vast majority of modern bikes. Conventional flooded batteries can work in bikes that originally used them, but upgrading to AGM works as long as the physical dimensions and terminal positions match.
Cold cranking amps (CCA) matter most in cold climates. AGM batteries typically deliver higher CCA per pound than flooded batteries of the same case size. If you ride year-round in a cold region, check the CCA rating, not just the Ah capacity.
Motorcycle Battery Questions
What does YTX mean on a motorcycle battery?
YTX stands for a factory-activated, sealed AGM battery in Yuasa's naming system. The Y is Yuasa, T indicates sealed and maintenance-free construction, and X means factory-activated. The electrolyte was added and the battery was charged at the factory before it shipped. When you buy a YTX battery, it arrives ready to install. No acid filling, no pre-charge needed. Other brands use the same YTX designation for direct-fit replacements: Powersport uses CTX, Adventure Power uses APTX.
Can I use a YTX12-BS instead of a YTX14-BS?
No. The YTX12-BS measures 150x87x131mm and has a 10Ah capacity. The YTX14-BS measures 150x87x146mm and has a 12Ah capacity. The YTX14-BS is 15mm taller and won't fit in a battery compartment sized for a YTX12-BS. Even if you could force it in, the YTX12-BS is too small to reliably start a bike designed for a YTX14-BS, especially in cold weather. Always match the OEM battery size exactly.
What is the difference between YTX and YB batteries?
YTX batteries are sealed AGM — they come factory-activated and need no maintenance. YB batteries are conventional flooded type. Many YB batteries ship dry and require you to fill them with electrolyte (acid) before the first use, then charge them before installing. During their lifespan, YB batteries need periodic water level checks and top-offs with distilled water. YTX batteries require none of that. For most modern bikes, YTX is the better choice.
How do I find the right battery for my motorcycle?
Start with your owner's manual or the battery currently in the bike. The battery model number is printed on a label on the case. Use that number to find your row in the chart above, then pick the brand you want. If the battery is too old to read, most Yuasa and OEM fitment guides are organized by year/make/model — search for "[your bike make] battery fitment guide" and Yuasa's site will return the correct part number. Physical dimensions and terminal orientation are the critical specs. Ah capacity should match or be very close to OEM.
Can I use a higher Ah battery in my motorcycle?
Only if the physical dimensions fit the original compartment. A battery with slightly higher Ah in the same case size is fine and may improve cold-weather starting. You cannot fit a physically larger battery into a compartment designed for a smaller one. A higher Ah battery charges normally on a stock charging system; the alternator doesn't care about the extra capacity. Going significantly lower in Ah than OEM spec is what causes problems, particularly on electric-start bikes.
How long does a motorcycle battery last?
A good AGM motorcycle battery typically lasts 3 to 5 years with proper care. Batteries on bikes that sit for months without a trickle charger often fail after 2 years or less. The main killers are deep discharge (letting it go completely dead), sulfation from long storage, and heat. If you store your bike over winter, connect a Battery Tender or similar float charger. Starting every few weeks and letting it idle isn't enough — idling at low RPM often doesn't fully recharge the battery.
Do I need to charge a new AGM motorcycle battery?
Most factory-activated YTX AGM batteries arrive with enough charge to start your bike immediately. If the battery sat in a warehouse for several months, it may have self-discharged. A quick check with a voltmeter helps — a fully charged 12V AGM should read 12.7V or higher at rest. If it reads below 12.4V, give it a full charge with a smart charger before installing. Never use a standard car battery charger on a motorcycle AGM battery; use one rated for AGM or with an AGM mode.
