The production of Zinc Air batteries by Panasonic was launched in Japan in 1985. In a Panasonic zinc air PR312 battery, oxygen from the environment is used to generate voltage. Air is used as an electrode, the battery itself contains an electrolyte and a porous zinc electrode that permits air to flow through. Because of this process, the batteries cannot be used in sealed devices where air cannot get inside. The generation of electricity starts when the seal is removed.
