Tigo Energy MU-ESW Maximizer Management Unit for Solar Arrays

Tigo Energy delivers more energy, active management, and enhanced safety for solar arrays. By maximizing the energy output of each individual module, Tigo Energy's revolutionary solution addresses a number of issues that limit the efficiency, availability, and flexibility of today's solar installations.

Environmental effects such as uneven soiling, temperature variations, slight differences in orientation, and silicon degradation can cause certain panels in an array to perform less efficiently than others. The Tigo Energy Maximizer system does not utilize traditional DC/DC or Micro-inverter conversion technology, which normally does not handle these "inefficiencies" most effectively. When used with your favorite central inverter, Tigo Energy's Maximizer solution produces 8% more energy output in ideal conditions, while less perfect sites could increase energy production by up to 20% more. Each panel in the array will have an “impedance matching” circuit, which can be programmed independently to carry current around the modules to extract their maximum energy harvest without affecting output of other modules in the string.

The Maximizer Management Unit (MMU) communicates between the maximizer and the inverter. It also allows system owners to observe and interact with the management system. The MMU communicates is wireless, thus allowing flexibility in the placement of the unit.

How Impedance Matching Works
  • Step 1: Module Maximizer components sense and accurately measure the module voltage, current and temperature.
  • Step 2: The Maximizer Management Unit (MMU) is able to calculate the exact properties of each module, including its optimum output settings. Using an equation developed by many mathematicians, this information is analyzed by the communications module in relation to input received from the current measurements of each module to determine the optimal settings.
  • Step 3: Impedance Matching components control the output of each module separately. Through a combination of a FET and small capacitor, impedance matching circuitry presents a virtual impedance to each module that is equal to the internal impedance of the corresponding module such that maximum energy is extracted from every module while not affecting the max power string current.
